Our Catchment

Background

Oyster Bay is the largest Bay within C Ward. It is used extensively by Shire residents for fishing, kayaking, waterskiing and for training by the Rowing Club. It forms an important vista and provides a sense of place and community for the residents of Kangaroo Pt, Sylvania, Kareela and Oyster Bay, and Oyster Creek is at the centre of the most loved nature reserve at Jannali.

Since around 1970, the Bay has been filled with approximately 30cm per decade of soft black mud. The mud is coming from sediment eroded from the Oyster Bay Catchment and transported into the bay during rain events by the creeks and drains. Oyster Bay is the most threatened waterway within the Sutherland Shire and if work is not done urgently, the entire bay will have become a mudflat within 10-15 years.
